Unlucky in love? It could be your genes, and we're not talking about the ones you wear.

According to media reports, genetic testing companies are promising to match couples based on DNA testing.

They claim a simple cheek swab will result in a better biological match, which will mean more fun in the sack, less infidelity and longer-lasting love.

Eric Holzle, founder of scientificmatch.com, an online dating site that uses DNA matching, said the benefits are endless.

"How many dating services can you think of where they can suggest you might have better children?" he said.

Singles who sign up for the test, which retails for about $135, receive a skin cells swab kit by post.

They then return their sample to the lab and receive results about two weeks later.

They also upload a profile and photos and undertake a personal values test.

Matches are then generated based on the DNA, values and preferences.

But the test has been rebuked by some medical professionals as nonsense.

Medical director of the general genetics clinic at Cleveland in the US said the companies were just trying to "make a buck".

Biological anthropologist and author of Why Him? Why Her? Helen Fisher said it is lifestyle choices, including whether the person smokes, is overweight or wants children, that are important when choosing a partner.

She believes genes play a role but said it's only one factor of a broad range of influences, and personality and physical appearance must also be considered.

We can't say that genes have ever been high on our dating requirements list.

Imagine taking your new scientifically matched boyf to meet your mates, "Ladies, this is Steve, we have 85 percent compatible DNA".

Hmmm, doesn’t sound too sexy to us.

Think we'll stick to the more traditional, 'how hot does his bum look in jeans' test, it may not be that scientific, but it's definitely more fun.

Would you be willing try it? What influences your decision when it comes to choosing a partner?
