A heavily pregnant Victoria Beckham has been accused of putting her unborn child at risk after wearing a pair of stilettos to a red-carpet event in Los Angeles.
Beckham, who is due to give birth to a girl in July, wore a pair of towering nude stilettos to the event where her manager, Simon Fuller, was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame last week.
But her choice has garnered criticism from health experts who say she's putting herself and her baby at risk. Australian Medical Association of Queensland president Dr Gino Pecoraro told the Sydney Morning Herald that a woman's centre of gravity changes when pregnant, meaning a fall is more likely when wearing high heels.
The presence of a hormone that helps the pelvic bone to relax in late-term women also affects the ankle joints and may make walking in heels more difficult, the Brisbane obstetrician and gynaecologist said.
"When you couple that with the significant change in your centre of gravity you get when you're carrying a child, and the shifts in balance necessary to wear these very high heels, the chances of a harmful fall is much higher," Dr Pecoraro said.
Beckham isn't the only pregnant celebrity struggling to let go of an addiction to six-inch heels. Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, and 30 Rock stars Tina Fey and Jane Krakowski have all chosen to forego flats for recent red-carpet events.
